I recently had the pleasure of taking my first aerial yoga class at Peace in Movement! I went in genuinely excited. And tadahhh✨ … Spoiler alert: it was SO good. ✨

If you’ve been following me here… You know I love exploring movement practices that actually support the nervous system (not stress it out).
And yep… Aerial yoga has been on my list for ages, so finally getting to try it felt like a little gift to myself.
And from the moment I walked in, my body knew. Lol 😍 This was going to be nourishing.
Truly enough… The studio was calm, welcoming, and deeply grounding. The kind of space where your shoulders drop without being told to, and your nervous system quietly exhales, oh… we’re safe here.
But… what is aerial yoga, exactly?
Aerial yoga uses a soft fabric hammock suspended from the ceiling to support the body through yoga poses, gentle inversions, and fluid movement.

The hammock acts as both a prop and a container, allowing for spinal decompression, supported inversions, and a sense of lightness that’s both calming and energizing.
How It Felt in My Body
What stood out most to me was how regulating and uplifting the experience felt.
Almost immediately, I noticed that:
- A sense of calm paired with gentle energy
- Decreased muscle and joint tension
- Fuller, more natural breathing
- Reduced mental noise
- A grounded yet light feeling in my body

The supported inversions were especially impactful. Being safely held by the hammock allowed my body to relax while improving circulation, reducing pressure on the spine, and offering a soothing sensory experience that the nervous system responds to beautifully.
Nervous System Regulation & Emotional Well-Being
Aerial yoga offers movement with support rather than strain, which is especially beneficial for individuals living with chronic stress, emotional exhaustion, or nervous system dysregulation.

The hammock provides a sense of containment and safety, something that can be deeply calming for highly sensitive people and trauma-informed bodies. This practice encourages presence, body awareness, and gentle engagement rather than pushing or forcing.
Aerial Yoga Benefits for Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)
What also stood out to me is how supportive aerial yoga can be for those experiencing Seasonal Affective Disorder or seasonal mood shifts.
Some of the key benefits include:
- Improved circulation and lymphatic flow, which can help combat the heaviness and sluggishness often felt during darker months
- Gentle inversions, which increase blood flow to the brain and may support mood and mental clarity
- Movement-based dopamine and serotonin support, helping counter low energy and depressive symptoms
- Nervous system regulation, which can reduce seasonal anxiety, irritability, and emotional fatigue
- A sense of play and lightness, which is often missing during the winter months

The combination of mindful movement, sensory input, and being physically supported creates an experience that feels both grounding and mood-lifting, an important balance for those navigating SAD.
Why I Loved It…
What I loved most about Peace in Movement was how intentional the entire experience felt. The guidance, pacing, and environment all encouraged ease, safety, and self-connection rather than performance.
It was a powerful reminder that regulation and emotional well-being don’t come from stillness alone. Sometimes, they come from gentle, joyful, supported movement.
My Final Thoughts…
If you’re looking for a movement practice that supports your nervous system, lifts your mood, and feels nourishing rather than depleting, I highly recommend aerial yoga.

My first class at Peace in Movement left me feeling lighter, calmer, and more energized, especially during a season when many of us need extra support. It’s a practice I’m excited to return to and continue exploring as part of my overall wellness routine.
