Millions of Americans clock in when the rest of us are clocking out. 

Emergency responders like paramedics, nurses, and police officers have to be on duty 24/7 to keep us safe. But they’re not the only night owls in the workforce. Plenty of people keep the midnight oil burning in hotels, stores, restaurants, on the roads, at power plants, and in factories and warehouses that never sleep.

I’ve seen the toll that consistent night shifts can take on people’s physical and mental well-being. Night shift works might offer some perks like less traffic and higher pay, but the health risks of working night shift often outweigh those benefits.

Regular working at night can throw off your body’s natural clock.

Pulling all-nighters pretty much demolishes those regular daily rhythms. Your body has no idea what time it’s supposed to be awake or asleep. That circadian chaos is really the biggest downside to working night shifts. Your internal cycles get completely disrupted and desynchronized from the normal routine.
